Artists see the world in a different way than most people. You might say we don't live on the same planet. But I believe our ability to see possibilites and different ways of doing things comes with responsibilities. As an artist I take those responsibilities very seriously.
Although I might do an occasional abstract piece, my work is largely representational, using images and symbols to convery messages and ideas. What I am trying to convey varies -- from giving people a sense of hope and meaning, to warning of the damage done by child abuse, to making people aware of the beauty all around them, to saying lighten up and have fun.
Since the message is the most important thin in my work, everything I do focuses on getting the message out. Materials and techniques are all chosen to tell a story. I do use basic elements of art and design -- color, line, shape, movement, prespective, but when it comes to choosing materials and techniques there are no rules other than using what works to convey the idea.
I usually do not work from sketches, preferring to design as I go. Of course I start out with an idea of where I want to go, but often change directions once I get started. Sometimes I cut rought patterns, but usually only use them to lay out on the fabric to see what my work might look like before I actually cut into fabric.
Using collage to tell stories with fabric, beads and found objects is what I do. The goal of these stories is to connect with people in a way that makes us realize our shared hopes, dreams, goals, fears and stories. When people connect on this level and realize we are more alike than different, the world is changed.
